Magnetic Island is becoming more energy efficient under the Townsville: Queensland Solar City project. The project, when complete, is predicted to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50,000 tonnes by 2013.

In Business and Industry

Business and industry can benefit from being more energy efficient, reducing operational costs and therefore improving their profitability. At the same they can improve environmental credentials by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their business.

The Department of Mines and Energy conducts EnergyWise Forums to provide case studies on successful energy efficiency projects, expert commentary about how to be more energy efficient and industry workshops to showcase energy efficient products. Since 2005, the Department has held free forums targeting office buildings, hotels and resorts; and the shopping centres and retail sector.

The Environmental Protection Agency administers the ecoBIZ program which helps Queensland businesses adopt energy efficient practices that are good for the financial bottom-line as well as for the environment.

The National Framework for Energy Efficiency (NFEE) is working nationally to bring energy efficiency opportunities to the attention of key decision-makers in large energy-using businesses, to motivate action by businesses and to improve the skill-base to identify energy efficiency opportunities. NFEE is also working to demonstrate the benefits of energy efficient technology, build industry capacity to deliver energy efficient solutions, promote innovation and reduce energy efficiency investment risks.
