Electricity

Queensland is one of the largest consumers of electricity in the National Electricity Market. The increase in consumption is being driven by our rapid economic and population growth. The Queensland Government is committed to meeting that demand and planning for future growth.

Since the creation of the National Electricity Market in 1998, Queensland has had the greatest level of investment in committed generation - equal to almost 3,500 megawatts of generation capacity. Queensland has sufficient generation capacity to meet the growth in demand for several years.

Almost a third of transmission investment under the National Electricity Market has occurred in Queensland, equal to $1 billion. Queensland Mines and Energy is also leading the reform agenda to deliver a national transmission framework that promotes investment, minimises costs and maximises service quality.

The department is working closely with electricity distributors and retailers ENERGEX and Ergon Energy to upgrade Queensland's electricity distribution system. The implementation of new, mandatory minimum service standards that ENERGEX and Ergon Energy must meet will ensure that they put the people who matter, their customers, first. The department is also introducing a comprehensive monitoring and reporting framework to ensure ENERGEX and Ergon Energy are more accountable to the public in terms of service performance.
