Background

Access to geothermal energy is currently regulated under the Geothermal Exploration Act 2004 (Qld) (the Exploration Act). The Exploration Act allows companies to tender for the right to explore for geothermal resources over selected land release areas.

The Queensland Government plans to replace the Exploration Act with a new legislative framework covering both geothermal exploration and production.

To ensure the new arrangements are successfully implemented, industry has been actively involved in the development of the new framework over the past few years.
