Townsville: Queenlsand Solar City

The Queensland Government has committed $5 million towards the Townsville: Queensland Solar City project. The project is installing solar panels and smart meters, as well as implementing other energy saving initiatives on Magnetic Island. It is predicted that the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50,000 tonnes by 2013.

In Government

Energy efficiency is as important for government as it is for business, industry and households. The Queensland Government agency responsible for promoting and developing clean energy sources is the Office of Clean Energy.

The Queensland Government is leading by example through its Government Energy Management Strategy which sets targets to reduce power bills for government owned and leased buildings and facilities. Any savings made by a government agency are retained by that agency.

Parliament House in Brisbane is powered entirely by renewable energy. Domestic and business consumers can also purchase green energy from Origin's GreenPower program or Ergon's Clean Energy program.

The National Framework for Energy Efficiency is also working nationally to demonstrate government leadership in the adoption of energy efficient pracitices and to develop standardised monitoring and reporting processes to evaluate energy efficiency initiatives.
