History of the Queensland Gas Scheme

The Queensland Gas Scheme commenced on 1 January 2005. The scheme was first announced in the Queensland Energy Policy - a Cleaner Energy Strategy (PDF - 479KB) in May 2000 and has undergone significant consultation with industry and stakeholders. Further initiatives contained in ClimateSmart 2050 built on the achievements of the earlier policy.

May 2008 - Queensland Parliament approved the Clean Energy Act 2008. The scheme's name was changed to Queensland Gas Scheme from 13% Gas Scheme to reflect that the 13 per cent liability will increase to 15 per cent in 2010 and for any year after 2010, a percentage not more than 18 per cent, prescribed under a regulation.

June 2007 - Queensland Government's ClimateSmart 2050 strategy was released.

October 2006 - Queensland Parliament approved the Electricity Regulation 2006. This helped define prescribed transmissions zones and prescribed programs under sections 135CO and 135 GR (respectively) of the Electricity Act 1994.

November 2004 - Queensland Parliament approved the Electricity Amendment Act 2004, bringing the scheme into existence from 1 January 2005 under the Electricity Act 1994.
