No interest appliance loans for storm victims

The Queensland Government is making available $100,000 in no interest loans to assist struggling households replace essential white goods damaged during South East Queensland storms and floods.

Eligible residents can access up to $2,500 in loans to help them purchase new energy-efficient appliances including refrigerators, washing machines, gas hot water systems and microwave ovens.

Successful applicants will enter into a no interest payment plan over two years.

The trial program delivers practical assistance to low-income households by providing an alternative to taking out high interest, short-term loans; and improving energy efficiency in their homes.

The trial is scheduled to end on 15 December 2009.

Am I eligible for a no interest loan?

You may be eligible for the trial program if you resided in the Ipswich City Council area, The Gap, Keperra (including Grovely), Ferny Hills or Arana Hills and have been affected by storms and floods.

Loans are only available to low income Queensland residents. This includes but is not limited to people receiving income support from Centrelink or holders of a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pension Card.

Applicants who have received a Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements payment may still access these loans.

How does the loan program work?

Loans are limited to the purchase of essential appliances such as refrigerators, gas hot water systems, washing machines and microwave ovens.  Freezers and clothes dryers are excluded as are other household items such as furniture, clothing or other non-gas/electrical household items.

Once an applicant is assessed as eligible, a cheque will be written out to the retailer from which the appliance will be purchased. The retailer must have an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Who do I contact to apply?

The trial program is being administered by Good Shepherd Youth and Family Service. All enquiries about applying for a no interest loan to replace damaged white goods should be directed to Good Shepherd on (07) 3041 4059.
