Sustainable Housing Code

If you own a home or are looking to buy or build, there are many ways you can incorporate sustainable living into your life. By using less energy around the home, you will be doing your bit for the environment and you'll also save money off your energy bills.

The Sustainable Housing Code, in effect since March 2006, requires by law that new houses in Queensland be more sustainable by ensuring efficient water and energy use. These mandatory energy saving measures include the installation of greenhouse efficient hot water systems in new houses and 40 per cent energy efficient lighting.

As part of the Sustainable Housing intiatives, electric hot water systems will be phased out in Queensland from 2010. Houses located within gas reticulated areas, which have an electric hot water system which needs replacement or upgrade, will need to install a greenhouse efficient hot water system - either solar, gas or electric heat pump.
