Community groups in the Cardwell and Johnstone Shires today received a boost in funding when Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson announced the successful recipients of Powerlink Queensland's Tully to Innisfail Community Benefits Program.
"Fourteen community groups will share in more than $108,000 in funding for worthwhile community projects including the installation of a new roof for a community hall, purchasing playground equipment for a kindergarten and upgrading a local sports facility," Mr Wilson said.
"Powerlink's Community Benefits Program aims to provide tangible and lasting benefits to local communities in the vicinity of new transmission line projects.
"The Tully to Innisfail transmission line is essential infrastructure that will support the growing north Queensland region and will help to underpin economic growth.
"The line will also reinforce electricity supply to the communities of Innisfail, El Arish and Mission Beach."
Powerlink Chief Operating Officer Simon Bartlett said local government support and community participation were vital to the success of Powerlink's Community Benefits Program.
"Powerlink's Community Benefits Program aims to partner with local groups to deliver benefits and important facilities and services to communities near our transmission lines," Mr Bartlett said.
"The program is separate, and in addition to the compensation paid to property owners directly affected by the transmission line project."
Mr Bartlett said construction of the Tully to Innisfail transmission line was progressing well.
Cardwell Shire Council Mayor Cr Joe Galeano and Johnstone Shire Council Administrator Graeme Webb welcomed the funding from Powerlink's Community Benefits Program for local community groups to provide important services and facilities.
The 14 projects which comprise the Tully to Innisfail Community Benefits Program are as follows:
- Cardwell Community Shire Support Centre - Purchase equipment and furniture for community space; $3,500.
- Mission Beach Surf Lifesaving Club - Purchase laptop to assist with education program at local schools; $1,196.
- Tully Bowhunters Club - Purchase equipment to be used as part of junior development program; $2,169.
- Tully Country Club Limited - Refurbishment of golf course; $5,000.
- Tully State High School P&C - Construction of two all-weather covered areas; $15,000.
- Community Emergency Support Group - Purchase mobile radios to improve emergency communication; $4,870.
- El Arish Community Sport and Recreation Association Inc - Install new roof on El Arish Community Hall; $21,584.
- Silkwood and District Action Group - Purchase museum display equipment; $3,300.
- Silkwood Junior Soccer Club - Revegetate fields and replace goal posts; $12,000.
- Silkwood Tennis Club - Repair court fencing; $11,000.
- St John's Silkwood Community Kindergarten - Purchase playground equipment; $11,305.
- Silkwood State School P&C Association - Upgrade basketball/netball facility;
$8,000. - Coconuts Outrigger Canoe Club Inc - Purchase Personal Floatation Devices; $4,508.
- El Arish Country Club - Construct new green on course; $5,000.
