Work starts on demolishing subsidence-damaged homes

Work will begin on Tuesday 9 June on demolishing homes in Collingwood Park that were damaged beyond repair by the April 2008 mine subsidence event.

The demolition process is expected to take approximately three weeks, and will involve the closure of the northern end of McInnerney Street for that time.

State Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller said nine properties in the immediate impact area of the subsidence event would be demolished.

"The nine properties that have been deemed uneconomical to repair are in Duncan, McInnerney and McLaughlin streets," Mrs Miller said.

"The first week of work is expected to be relatively low key, but the big equipment will move in for the second and third weeks.

"North Coast Recyclers and Demolition have obtained all the appropriate approvals from Ipswich City Council, including hours of operation to ensure as minimal an impact on surrounding neighbours as possible."

The demolition crews will work from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 7am-noon Saturdays during the three weeks it is expected to take to complete the demolitions.

Mrs Miller said McInnerney Street would be closed between Duncan Street and Fowler Street for the duration of the demolitions, with all properties in that section of the street to be demolished.

"At this stage there has been no decision on the future use of the land left vacant by the demolitions, but I as local member have given a commitment that the community will be consulted once the time comes to make that decision," Mrs Miller said.

The Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, Mines and Energy has written to residents in the immediate area advising them of the demolitions, and has also contacted the previous owners of the property to let them know their former homes are about to be demolished.

"The Department has already provided significant assistance to these property owners," Mrs Miller said.

"As well as purchasing their properties, the Government has assisted all the property owners with removal and associated costs related to the sale of their Collingwood Park property and the purchase of their new homes, including reconnection of utility costs."
