03/07/09Bligh Government aids rescue of 950 Yabulu jobs
A commitment from the Bligh Government has helped seal a deal to continue operation of Yabulu Nickel Refinery in Townsville.
Ms Bligh today welcomed the official announcement that BHP Billiton would sell the refinery to companies owned by Clive Palmer - delivering certainty to the Queenslanders employed there.
"The Yabulu Refinery currently employs around 950 Queenslanders and is an important contributor to North Queensland's local economy," Ms Bligh said.
"I met with both BHP Billiton and Mr Palmer earlier in the week to discuss the proposed sale and made it very clear that the Government would provide every assistance to ensure a smooth transition of ownership and continued operation of the refinery.
"Specifically, Mr Palmer sought an assurance that the Government would not activate its right to renegotiate agreements and regulatory requirements upon transfer of ownership.
"This was an assurance I was happy to provide to protect the jobs of Queenslanders employed at Yabulu.
"As we continue to feel the effects of the global financial crisis, the sale and continued operation of Yabulu is good news for the Townsville region and good news for the State's economy."
