Certifying & Approving Gas Devices
Type A and Type B gas devices can only be offered for sale, installation or use if the device has been approved by the Chief Inspector or by a person or body approved by the Chief Inspector under s733(2) Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004.
These persons/bodies approved by the Chief Inspector, Petroleum and Gas are called approving authorities. Separate approving authorities exist for Type A appliances (ie. white goods such as hot water heater, cookers etc) and Type B gas devices (commercial and industrial gas burners etc). A List of Type A & B gas device approving authorities in Queensland is available.
Type A approving authorities
Individual persons who are an approved individual Type A approving authority working for the Queensland Gas Association (an approving authority in their own right), are subject to an individual Type A certifier code of practice (PDF, 46 Kb).
Type B gas device approval processes
When a Type B gas device is manufactured/imported, designed, constructed and installed there is a three stage process of certification and approval. It is important that importers/manufacturers, owners and operators, and installers of such equipment fully understand their obligations in each of these processes, as they are each required to obtain or provide certification or approval of the device.
Type B approving authorities
The Chief Inspector, Petroleum and Gas may approve persons/bodies to be Type B approving authorities. Applications to be a Type B approving authority can be made on the application form (PDF, 177 Kb).
Type B approving authorites will be authorised to approve three classes of gas devices based on gas usage capacity and complexity. These classes and the process for assessing and approving approving authorities are outlined in the Type B approving authority approval process (PDF 142 Kb).
Type B approving authorities must abide by a Code of conduct and guideline for making approvals (PDF, 102 Kb). The approval of Type B devices by the approving authority must be made on the Approval Certificate.
The Chief Inspector, Petroleum and Gas has approved Type B devices (PDF, 20 kB).
