Mining and the environment
Environmental management and regulation of the mining industry in Queensland is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency through the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld).
This function was previously the responsibility of the then Department of Mines and Energy (DME), now the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M). Under the Environmental Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2000, provisions in the Mineral Resources Act 1989 relating to environmental management of mines were transferred, with amendments, to the Environmental Protection Act 1994.
NR&M retains certain responsibilities with respect to the environmental management of mining in Queensland.
