Petroleum and gas legislation
Legislation
Safety in the petroleum and gas industries is dealt with by the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 and Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004.
The legislation commenced on 31 December 2004. There were some transitional periods before particular provisions take effect. The new legislation also introduced a new coal seam gas regime that deals with interactions of petroleum operations and coal exploration and mining operations. This places additional safety related requirements on tenure holders and operators of operating plants.
DME is also responsible for administering the safety of drilling and related activities undertaken with respect to exploration for geothermal energy under the Geothermal Exploration Act 2004.
