Mining Advisory Councils
The Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Council was constituted on 29 October 1999 under Part 6 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 - "Industry Consultative Arrangements'.
The Mining Safety and Health Advisory Council was constituted on 29 October 1999 under part 6 'Industry Consultative Atrrangements' of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999.
The primary function of both Councils is to give advice and make recommendations to the Minister about promoting and protecting the safety and health of persons at mines.

Each Council discharges its primary function by periodically reviewing the effectiveness of the mining safety and health legislation, and the effectiveness of the control of risk to any person from mining operations.
It also has the function of recognising, establising and publishing the competencies accepted by it as qualifying a person to perform stated tasks, and the safety and health competencies required to perform the duties of a person under each Act.

Under section 67 of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and section 76 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 the advisory councils have recognised certain competencies. These competencies are documented below:
