North-West Queensland Mineral Province Report Data Set

The North-West Queensland Mineral Province Study was initiated to:

  • provide industry with new geoscientific data in areas of high mineral potential;
  • increase the accessibility of information by developing modern digital systems;
  • promote Queensland's mineral prospectivity to both domestic and international markets.

The Study aimed to enhance the impetus, effectiveness and success rate of exploration activities in the North-West Queensland region by:

  • providing fresh insights into the geology and mineralisation;
  • developing new exploration concepts and specific base and precious metal targets;
  • making the new data available to industry in a readily accessible digital form.

The Study was undertaken over the period March to October 2000 by a team comprising industry consultants, Taylor Wall and Associates, SRK Consulting Pty Ltd and ESRI Australia and personnel from the then Department of Mines and Energy.

The Study team has produced the following new data

  • a state-of-the-art, 4D tectonostratigraphic and structural synthesis;
  • new digital geological maps, with geology interpreted under post-mineralisation cover;
  • a time-space framework digitally linked with maps, stratigraphic, lithological and geochronological information;
  • a summary of the key characteristics and targeting criteria for the various deposit styles of the region, with ranked targets for each of the main deposit styles.

The North-west Queensland Mineral Province GIS is a recompilation of the original North-West Queensland Mineral Province Report GIS compiled in 2000. Data themes have been updated where relevant.

The data is delivered

  • via a standalone GIS viewer called GeoViewer (shapefiles)
  • as ArcGIS mxd documents (geodatabase and lyr files)
  • as MapInfo tables and one workspace for Proterozoic geology.

The Study is of particular interest to mineral explorers as it provides in digital GIS format the first fully integrated geological interpretation of the outcropping and covered areas of this world-class mineral province; identifies and ranks priority target zones for base metal and gold deposits, based on practical deposit models, explicit exploration criteria and the new stratigraphic, structural and igneous framework; demonstrates the global standing of the North-west Queensland Mineral Province in terms of mineral endowment, regulatory framework and untested opportunities.
