Petroleum & Gas
The Department of Mines and Energy (DME) supports Queensland's petroleum and gas industries through providing expert advice and industry liaison services for investment and project development.
Queensland has a number of basins that are currently producing or have the potential to produce oil and gas.
Find out more about petroleum and gas production.
Coal seam gas is an important energy resource in Queensland. Production of this gas now supplies an increasing proportion of the Queensland gas market.
Find out more about coal seam gas (CSG).
Water is a primary by-product of CSG development. The quality of the water ranges from potable to saline and may be rich in other constituents that make it unsuitable for many uses. The Queensland Government commissioned a report to look into ways to manage this water.

DME is also responsible for monitoring and supporting safety in the gas and petroleum industries.

Queensland's petroleum - Exploration and development potential - January 2009
Queensland offers significant opportunities for participation in the state's rapidly expanding petroleum industry. Exploration expenditure for the petroleum industry (including coal seam gas) in Queensland declined for 2007/08 with an expenditure of A$165.5 million compared to A$191.9 million in 2006/07.
Petroleum exploration and development during 2007/08 reached record levels with over 670 petroleum wells drilled, the largest number of wells drilled in Queensland during a 12 month period.
This was made up of about 600 coal seam gas wells and 70 conventional petroleum wells. During 2007/08, four new oil discoveries were made in the Cooper-Eromanga basins.
During 2007/08, coal seam gas production exceeded 3342.56 million cubic metres (Mm3) [125 petajoules (PJ)] and by 2009/10 is expected to increase to more than 130 PJ.
As at 30 June 2008, 285 148.93 Mm3 (10 680 PJ) of proved and probable (2P) coal seam gas reserves have been certified and this figure is set to increase. Conventional gas production continued to decline.
In 2007/08, a total of 2852.15 Mm3 (107 PJ) of conventional gas were produced compared to 3421.77 Mm3 (128 PJ) produced in 2006/07. Oil production increased with 532 megalitres (ML) [3.3 million barrels (bbl)] produced in 2007/08 compared to 461 ML (2.9 million bbl) produced in 2006/07.
