Queensland Mines and Energy is responsible for monitoring and supporting safety in the gas and petroleum industries.

Position Vacancy - Deputy Chief Inspector

The Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate is looking for someone to fill the position of Deputy Chief Inspector.  We are looking for a highly motivated person to assist the Chief Inspector in the leadership, management and strategic direction of the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate.  This will include undertaking strategic initiatives, providing high level expert advice, and ensuring regulatory compliance and high levels of safety performance across all the Petroleum and Gas related industries.  For information go to Smart Jobs or Seek.com.

What's covered?

Safety in the petroleum and gas industries is regulated by the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 and Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004. This is undertaken by the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate (view Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate contact list (PDF, 40 kB)). The legislation covers naturally produced petroleum and natural gas, fuel gases such as LPG, CNG, LNG and related products, and sewage and other bio-gases. It does not cover acetylene, ammonia, petrol, diesel and other 'refined gases or products'.

Industries covered by the legislation include petroleum exploration and production, petroleum pipelines, gas distribution (including reticulation and gas cylinders), automotive LPG, gas users (from power stations to pottery kilns) and licensing the installation and servicing of domestic, commercial and industrial gas devices.

Under the legislation and regulation, a number of activities require forms to be submitted to the department or certificates to be issued to owners and operators of gas systems.

Safety information and planning

QME helps support safety in the industry through safety alerts, instructions and newsletters and safety management plans. It also publishes a monthly report about serious accidents and high potential incidents.
