Potential commercial area (PCA)

If, during the course of exploration activities, the holder of an ATP makes a petroleum discovery, there are two options available. Depending on the circumstances of the discovery, the holder of the ATP may apply for a:

• potential commercial area
• petroleum lease.

If the discovery is not currently commercially viable, but is likely to become commercially viable within 15 years, the holder of an ATP may apply to the Minister to declare that relevant area of the ATP as a potential commercial area (PCA). If the discovery is currently commercially viable, the holder of an ATP (or any person or company who has the consent of the holder) may apply to the Minister to grant a petroleum lease over the relevant area of the ATP.
