Queensland's World-class Coals - November 2007

Queensland has a rich endowment of high-quality coals, with more than 30 billion tonnes (raw coal in-situ) identified by drilling. The State has identified resources of coking coal, amounting to about 11 billion tonnes, of which about 4 billion tonnes is suitable for open-cut mining.

Located in central Queensland, the Bowen Basin contains much of the State's coal resources including virtually all of Queensland's prime coking coal reserves.

World-class coal mines and infrastructure, including some electrified rail links from the coalfields, allow the efficient production and transport of coal to six coal export terminals.

Utilisation of Queensland's low and high volatile coals in power generation

The main purpose of this paper is to show the merits of Queensland thermal coals for power generation based on local experience with a broad range of coals and power plant designs.

Queensland high energy coals for the Asia-Pacific thermal coal market

This report examines the combustion performance of Queensland Bowen Basin coals which are fired in several Queensland power stations, aside from Millmerran, Kogan Creek and Tarong.

The report also looks at pilot scale evaluations conducted at ACIRL's Combustion Test Facility on low volatile coals and their use in coal blends.

Utilisation of Walloon Coals of Southern Queensland for Power Generation

This report gathers information from several QTHERM technical reports into a glossy colour publication. Produced with industry assistance, the report examines the occurrence, resources, production, utilisation and coal properties of Walloon coals of the Surat and Moreton Basins, as well as providing detailed combustion and environmental performance of the coals, as used in Queensland power stations.

Walloon Coals: their properties and power station performance

This report evaluates thermal coals of the Walloon Coal Measures and compares their performance with other thermal coals used in Queensland power stations. The report draws on operational experience at the Swanbank and Tarong power stations as well as results of pilot-scale testing from the ACIRL Australian Combustion Testing Centre (ACTC).

The significance of coal nitrogen in the combustion process

This report was commissioned in June 1995 and compiled by the Australian Technology Centre. The report summarises the role played by each of the major contributors to the emission of NOx in the combustion process.
