Regolith Landforms Mapping Project
A project to complete a regolith landforms map of Queensland commenced in 2006 and is due to be completed in mid 2008. The project is a cooperative effort involving:
- Geological Survey of Queensland
- Cooperative Research Centre for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration / Geoscience Australia / CSIRO / ANU
- Department of Natural Resources and Water, Queensland
The Queensland map will be continuous along its western border with a similar map completed for the Northern Territory in 2006. The mapping is part of a long term objective to complete coverage of the whole of Australia.
There will be three main outcomes of the project:
- GIS map of the regolith and landforms of Queensland
- An Atlas of regolith materials of Queensland, including photographs, descriptions, and laboratory analyses
- Paleomagnetic database to establish an age context for regolith and landforms
The regolith landforms map will be based on extensive field surveys supplemented by satellite and geophysical imagery, and will also draw on previous geological and landscape mapping.
