GIS Information and Data Sets

GIS data sets on CD and DVD

The GIS packages are products put together at the end of major regional studies by the Geological Survey of Queensland. Unless otherwise specified they have not been updated since they were assembled, even though more recent data may have been acquired within the areas. For example, errors may have been fixed and updates or additions made to various map areas in the primary database, from which the GIS geology layers were generated. These will not be reflected in the GIS. In such cases the data presented as separate map tiles in the Digital geological mapping data product will be more up-to-date (provide link) and it may be an advantage to purchase both products. In some areas more detailed geophysical data may have been acquired. For further information about possible changes and their extent, please use the contacts at the bottom of this page.

South-East Queensland GIS (Version 2)

The South-East Queensland Region Geoscience Data Set (Version 2) is an integrated digital geological compilation covering an area from the New South Wales border north to Rainbow Beach and west to Toowoomba.

This version contains an additional 15,000 km2 of seamless geological data compiled at a nominal scale of 1:100 000. The data have been derived from regional geological mapping programs of the Geological Survey of Queensland with additional data from University theses and exploration company mapping.

1:100 000 map sheet coverage includes - Laguna Bay, Gympie, Goomeri, Murgon, Boondooma, Jandowae, Nanango, Kingaroy, Nambour, Caloundra, Esk, Oakey, Toowoomba, Caboolture, Brisbane, Helidon, Ipswich, Beenleigh, Warwick, Mount Lindesay and Murwillumbah.

The SEQ GIS is supplied in both ArcView and MapInfo formats.  Data sets on this product include geological boundaries, structure, current and abandoned mine locations, geological site information, isotopic rock age dates, stratigraphic drilling locations, geochemistry, tenure (historical and current) as at October 2002, coal resource areas and quarry data.  The package also includes geophysical images, with interpretations of the magnetic image.

Yarrol South Connors GIS (Version 2)

The Central Queensland Region Geoscience data set is an integrated digital geological information package for the Yarrol and South Connors-Auburn-Gogango Project areas. The GIS package incorporates the results of detailed geological and mineral occurrence mapping programs conducted by the department's Geological Survey of Queensland.

The GIS package covers an area from Mackay in the north, to Mundubbera in the south, and is centred on the world-class gold deposit at Mount Morgan.

The 1:250 000 map sheets of Mackay, St Lawrence, Rockhampton, Duaringa, Mundubbera and Monto define the project boundaries.

The data is supplied in both ArcView and MapInfo formats. The GIS package includes information on geology of the area; solid geology based on tectonic setting; airborne magnetic and radiometric images; gravity images; landsat images, geophysical interpretation; whole rock geochemical and geochronological data for igneous units; locations of historical exploration tenures, and the locations and descriptions of about 1600 mineral occurrences. In addition, more than 26 000 geological site observations are on the CD.

North Queensland Gold and Base Metals Study (Georgetown)

Stage 1 of the North Queensland Gold and Base Metal Study is an integrated digital geological information package for the Georgetown area. The Georgetown GIS is the first of a three-stage project which covers the Georgetown (Croydon), Charters Towers and Hodgkinson geological provinces.

The Georgetown area is most prospective for epithermal gold systems, the Broken Hill type base metal mineralisation model, Kidston-Mount Leyshon type gold model, and possibly Carlin style mineralisation.

The reinterpretation of the data for the Georgetown area involved a desktop analysis with some limited field checking of the significant geological revisions. The GIS is available in ArcView and MapInfo formats and contains geology, mineral occurrences, geophysical images, interpreted magnetic lineaments, whole rock geochemistry and geological field observations and historic exploration tenure. A solid geology interpretation (with alluvium, soils, regolith and Mesozoic age rocks removed from the data) has also been made for the region.

The 1:100 000 map sheets of Lyndbrook, Bullock Creek, Croydon, Gilbert River, Forest Home, Georgetown, Mount Surprise, Saint Ronans, Prospect, Esmeralda, North Head, Forsayth, Einasleigh, Conjuboy, Pelham, Bellfield, Gilberton, Lyndhurst, Burges, Etherdale, Mount Norman and Hampstead define the project boundaries.

This GIS product is now available as a double CD set. One CD contains the GIS ArcView format, and the other the MapInfo format.

North Queensland Gold and Base Metals Study (Charters Towers)

Stage 2 of the North Queensland Gold and Base Metal Study is an integrated digital geological information package for the Charters Towers area. The Charters Towers GIS is the second of a three-stage project which covers the Georgetown (Croydon), Charters Towers and Hodgkinson geological provinces.

The Charters Towers area is most prospective for mesothermal granite-hosted veins (Charters Towers), intrusive-related, breccia-hosted (Mount Leyshon), and mesothermal multiphase vein (Nolan's-Sarsfield) gold deposit styles and volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposit styles (Highway/Reward and Thalanga).

The reinterpretation of the data for the Charters Towers area involved a desktop analysis with some limited field checking of the significant geological revisions.

The GIS is available in ArcView and MapInfo formats and contains geology (surface and basement), mineral occurrences, geophysical images, interpreted magnetic lineaments, geological field observations, whole rock geochemistry, exploration geochemistry sample locations, topographic map themes and and historic exploration tenure.

The basement geology interpretation was derived by removing alluvium, soils, regolith and some Mesozoic age rocks from the surficial data.

The 1:100 000 map sheets of Conjuboy, Valley of Lagoons, Kangaroo Hills, Ingham, Palm Islands, Burges, Clarke River, Ewan, Rollingstone, Townsville Chudleigh Park, Wandovale, Maryvale, Hillgrove, Dotswood, Mingela, White Mountains, Lolworth, Homestead, Charters Towers, Ravenswood, and part of Pentland define the project boundaries.

This GIS product is now available as a double CD set. One CD contains the GIS ArcView format, and the other the MapInfo format.
