According to International Labour Organisation estimates, the mining industry employs more than 11 million people, and more than 200 million people rely on mining for their income. While accounting for only 0.4% of the world's workforce, the mining industry is responsible for over 3% of work-related fatalities. This translates to an annual loss of more than 20 000 lives through preventable accidents, and hundreds of thousands of debilitating work-related injuries. Understanding and researching safety and health needs is critical to reducing human suffering and minimising the future industry safety risks

The 31st international conference of Safety in Mines Research Institutes  was held in Brisbane, Queensland from 2-5 October 2005. The conference, which brought together the world's leading mining safety and health researchers, focussed on minimising risks to personnel in the global mining industry.

Conference organisation

The conference was hosted by the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (Simtars).

It was facilitated and planned by an executive organisation committee chaired by the Director of Simtars, Mr Stewart Bell.

The conference sponsors were:

  • Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Simtars
  • Mining Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC)
  • New South Wales Coal Services Health and Safety Trust
  • CSIRO

Chairman's statement

The SIMRI conference held in Brisbane from 2-5 October 2005, was attended by delegates from all over the mining world, and the 60 papers presented provided an intellectual smorgasbord for attendees who will be able to use this information in their national mining industries.

The exhibition which ran in conjunction with the conference demonstrated the latest mining technology, and was also well supported.

The 2007 event will be held in Beijing, and it was decided at the conference that the 2009 conference will be convened by Poland.

As Chairman of the conference, it was my privilege to be involved with this event and to greet the international and local delegates.

I would like to thank the organising committee and the conference coordinator, Ms Maree Tanner, for their unstinting efforts in making this event the great success that it was.

Stewart Bell
SIMRI Conference Chair
